No one in the boxing world has learned faster than the new PNW Professional Boxing Promotions. Their first event had several small glitches, as to be expected. Their second event, held September 24 at Harmony Hall in Lacey, was mostly smooth sailing. The weigh in the day before, at Inferno’s Pizza and Bar at 8825 Tallon Ln in Lacey, actually happened on time, something that rarely occurs with established promoters. That was followed by a lavish spread of pasta, bread, salad, and pizza for the participants and offered a chance for fans and press to meet the fighters. The show featured new and improved lighting, which was a problem last time. Better food, better drinks, all kept the standing room only crowd happy. They have even brought back the after fight party so fans can mingle with the fighters.

Richard Van Siclen is in the perfect weight division to make a mark in the light heavyweight division. The division is lightly stocked with mediocre champions. He is an interesting young man and has the distinction of holding a BA degree in nutrition from the University of Washington. He is presently working on his MA degree. He is also a 2 times golden gloves champion and a 3 time All American. Boxing can use more like him.

After about 45 amateur fights, 2 time golden gloves champion Kevin Torres made an impressive pro debut against Tim Abell. The fighter from Bellingham travels every day to train with legend Tom Mustin in Tacoma. Like every boxer he hopes to go far in the game. “I want to reach ever higher levels.” So far he looks pretty good.

Who doesn’t like Marquis Weston, both as a boxer and as a man. He is always gracious and charming with a wide grin that draws you in, an intelligent young man with a lot to say. Lately he has been dividing his training between the northwest and Las Vegas where he is drawing attention in the boxing world.
